Bulongo, Kasai Occidental, Congo 1980
For a time I lived and worked in the small village of Bulongo, in the Congo river basin. Although it was not a big village (we had no electricity, running water, etc.), it was the seat of the local catholic church which brought people from all neighboring villages.
This was Easter Day, and *everybody* turned out. Each village sent their town representatives who are holding their village name on the signs....hard to read here, but on the slide I can read: Biyamba, Bena Buaya, Bena Kasa, Bena Kashila, etc.
Each Village gave a performance, musical and/or dance, all in observance of the Easter celebration. The afternoon was followed by bottle races!
Such a sense of community there. Of participation. Of connectedness that I don't feel here in the US.
