Bulongo, Kasai Occidental, Congo 1980
In the late 70s early 80s I lived in a small village in the Congo river basin called Bulongo. No electricity, no running water, deep in the rain forest. Every morning, and every evening (as in this photo) you could hear throughout the village the deep sound of wuump!-wuump! wuump!-wuump! wuump!-wuump! as the women pounded manioc and corn into flour for the family's meal. It was like a heartbeat. Reliable. Reassuring.
Sitting at home in Seattle now, surrounded by convenience and noise, I miss this living heartbeat of a community.
