Whitewater Canyon, New Mexico
Spring Break, 1976

After a long drive, a long hike, dinner, finally Susan relaxing by the campfire. Just the sounds of the breeze coming down the canyon through the pines, the hissing and pops of the fire, and the occasional clatter of rocks from some animal out in the darkness.

After years of working construction and listening to too much loud music, I developed tinnitus (persistent, inescapable hissing in my ears). These sounds (the wind in the trees, gentle noises of the night) are largely lost to me now, except in memory. I find this photo, this memory of place and time and sound reassuring.

About this photo: This was shot on kodacolor 100, with about a 3 second exposure. The aperture is wide open to get Susan in softer focus in the background (and capture the most light). The neg was scanned in with a Nikon coolscan 5000, with very little post processing.

Susan is also seen here, and here.
